My College Magazine

Here i have used learning objective 2 as i have applied knowledge and showed how meanings are created when analyzing media products and evaluated my own practical work.

Firstly, when deciding the colour scheme of my college magazine I researched around TRC the colour schemes put into their leaflets and posters etc. I decided to stick to this colour scheme of red, yellow and blue to give a sense of familiarity to the reader. I also stick to these three colours so the magazine isn’t too overpowering.
Also, choosing the correct fonts was very important with my college my magazine.
Throughout I have stuck to two fonts as this makes the magazine look neat and tidy. I have used a drop shadow however on my masthead and my main headline, this is to make them stand out. My masthead is especially important as it establishes what the magazine is and should hopefully become familiar to the readers.
I have used anchorage between my main headline and photo as it says “TRC EXAM RESULTS 2009” along with a picture of a college student. I also use a strapline saying “the best yet!” this is to attract the reader and draw them in with a positive article. As this is my main issue I have written it in yellow as it stands out the most as it is the main headline but still sticks to my colour scheme.
Another article in my magazine which is shown on the front cover is the “Healthy Eating Campaign” This is because it is a common issue in today’s society and is especially common throughout colleges. Underneath I have written “RESULTS: Why You Chose To Eat Healthy” this is because it makes the reader feel like they and students like them have involvement with the magazine. This is also why I have used the “VOTE NOW!” so that readers can feel like they can have involvement with it.
Finally I have a banner across the bottom. The word “Plus” shows that there is even more to read inside the magazine, and some of the articles may appeal top the reader if the main ones don’t and still encourage them to read the magazine.

For my contents page I have again used my masthead as it follows “THIS
WEEK” This is because it is to say to the reader “this week at Thomas Rotherham College” as that is what the magazine includes, however it still sticks to the familiar TRC logo and masthead.
I split my contents up into three sections “NEWS” “EVENTS”
and “YOU” as this makes it easier for the reader as they can find exactly what they are looking for. However I don’t give too much information about they articles so to make the reader want to read on.
I also include a subject index for students who are interested in finding out news about certain subjects, so the magazine will also appeal to new starters of the college and people who are interested in coming to TRC as well as the students who are already there. Everything has a page number for convenience.
There are photos on my contents page as a use of anchorage with the text to show the reader what is inside the magazine. They are in tilted boxes to make it look fun and to appeal to its young teenage audience. Again I stick to the same three colours but don’t use too many boxes of block colours as the contents is more focused on the text and showing the reader what is featured throughout and being easy to understand rather than attracting them in like with the front cover.
Finally I have included the college email address at the bottom of the page in case anyone needs to contact the college for anything, or about any issues in the magazine. The reason I have used email is because it is the commonly used with the target audience of students.
