In order to fill assesment objective 4 i undertook the research of Bauer. Bauer
Bauer is an independant company which owns a number of media magazines. Some of these are music magazines. This includes Mojo which is a magazine that deals with different genres of music therefore is aimed at a mainstream audience. This means it caters for a wider audience. It costs around £4.30. Also a mainstream music magazine from Bauer is the magazine Q as this features different types of music. This c
osts around £3.50. Kerrang! however has a main sub genre of rock and is therefore aimed at a niche audience, which means a particular audience. This has a lower cost of £2.20 per issue.
The circulation figures for last year for the mainstream magazines are Q (103,017) and Mojo (100,507). These are higher than the niche magazine Kerrang! (52,272) which is considerably lower as it is catered for a smaller, more individual audience.
Q and Mojo try to target their older age demographic by including a wide variety of music and issues within their magazines as well as delivering them on a consistent colour scheme to appeal to both a male and female wide audience. The photos and issues change each week depending on what sort of music they are dealing with. It also advertising things like sensible cars to appeal to its demographic.
Kerrang however deals with issues with rock bands and music and can use mo
re creative colours to appeal to its niche audience. The way in which the photos are taken are different as they bands are rarely smiling and can look pretty aggressive. This is because it has a younger demographic of 16-25 individually styled teenagers. Its demographic is 3:2 for male to female.
Bauer magazines make the use of synergy as with certain issues they may come with another media product.
For example when subscribing to Q magazine you can get a free Killer’s CD or free Spinal Tap CD and Walk The Line DVD.
Or when subscribing to Mojo you can get a Bruce Springstein and a Nick Cave CD or a U2 CD. Both Q and Mojo offer a wider range of music which appeals to their demographic.
