In order to fill assesment objective 4 i undertook the research of IPC.
IPC
A leading company and magazine publisher within the media industry is IPC. IPC is owned by the publishing division of the conglomerate Time Warner which is Time Inc. and is one of five publishing divisions.
IPC owns a number of magazines, one of which is the music magazine NME. NME’s main sub genre is indie so therefore it is aimed at a niche audience as it caters for a smaller, specific audience. Because of this it only costs £2.10. This is cheaper than other mainstream music as because of its smaller audience this will hop
efully attract more buyers to this magazine rather than the more expensive ones. Another music magazine produced by IPC is Uncut. This is a film and music magazine, and the sub genre of the music is rock. This too is for a niche audience and costs around £4.30.
The circulation figures for last year for NME were 48,459 which has fallen from 64,033. This is much lower than the mainstream magazine’s from Bauer. The circulation figures for Uncut were (86,925).
NME tries to target its demographic of young inide teenagers by featuring different issues and promotions throughout the magazine to appeal to as many people as possible. They do this by using a constant colour scheme of red to appeal to both male and female audiences, and often have a main picture with a band or musician that could be seen as an ideal self or ideal partner.
They list gigs each issue as this appeals to their indie audience and feature many issues about bands and their personal lives as this draws people in. Uncut magazine tries to target its demographic which is an older generation than NME by focusing their issues more on the actual music. They often use a photo with a band or band member looking very serious as they focus on the more serious side of music.
NME makes the use of synergy, especially with its website. Here you can access PHOTOS, VIDEOS, RADIO, TV, MOBILE as well as the MAGAZINE. Uncut however mainly focuses on the two media institutions, music and film. It also has a wesbsite and some issues come with a CD.
